The snake which gives Gold coins

Once there lived a poor Brahmin in Panchagiri village along with his wife and 11 years old kid. He used to toil in fields to earn bread and butter for his family. Due to poor health and misfortune,  he could not earn decent amount of money that is required to lead a lavish life that his wife always dreams. One afternoon after completing the work in fields,he thought of taking a small nap and was selecting the place where there is a good amount of shade. Quickly, he saw a lush and big Neem tree and decided to take a catnap under its shades. He rolled out the blanket from the bag and laid it on the floor. While witnessing and enjoying the beauty of the surroundings, he soon observed a big snake slowly crawling out of the anthill. He thought that it might be a guardian deity for the fields for which he had not paid any homeage as a result of which the luck is not favoring for him.

Since then, he started serving milk to the snake to pay homage in the bowl and said that, "Oh! God I could not recognize that you are residing in my field, I am a fool, please forgive me and accept my offering". After offering milk, the farmer completed the rest of the work in the fields and left home late evening. When he was carrying out the work in fields the very next day, he saw something shining from a distance and when he came closer, he was delighted to see a gold coin in the bowl in which he offered milk to the snake near the anthill. The Brahmin used to get a gold coin everyday for serving milk to the snake. This continued for many years. The Brahmin started growing affluent day by day. He constructed a luxurious home and purchased assets. He earned lots of wealth for lifetime.

One fine day he received a call from his manager saying that there is some important meeting to attend abroad. The Brahmin leaves abroad to attend the business meeting. While flying overseas, his father handed over the mantle of offering milk to the snake to his son. His mischievous and greedy son had accepted this proposal and went to the fields and offered a bowl of milk to the snake. The next day when he came to offer the milk he saw a gold coin in the bowl. He thought that the anthill might be full of gold coins and got a stupid idea of killing the snake to dig the anthill and extract all coins at one go. He chalked out a plan and brought a big cane to kill the snake. He first offered a bowl of milk as usual; when the snake came out from the anthill, he tried to hit the hood of the snake with the stick hardly. The snake narrowly escaped the blow and attacked the boy.The boy died with the snake bite.

The villagers expressed the condolences for the boy’s family. The Brahmin came to know about the death of his son after reaching the village and the villagers narrated the entire story to the father of decease. With heavy heart,  he gave a final farewell to his son. After few days, he went back to fields to serve milk to the snake and praised it with a loud voice. The snake came out of anthill and said, "Oh! Brahmin you came here out of greed even leaving the trauma for your lost son who passed away few days back. How can I forget the stick blow and pain I underwent because of your son's mischevious act"? After saying these words, the snake gave him a precious diamond and insisted not to come again to meet him. The snake disappeared from the anthill and he left back to his home with a diamond and grief for his son.

Greed is very harmful and dangerous emotion that incurs severe loss for human beings
